What is a skill group?

Skill groups are different than traditional support groups. Skill groups help individuals openly discuss an issue and create a plan while guided by a facilitator. Through sharing personal experiences, participants learn valuable skills within a supportive environment. These groups foster a sense of solidarity, reminding individuals are capable of creating and executing a plan to bring meaningful change into their lives.

Skill Groups Can Help You:

Information and Education

Skill groups provide a platform for sharing valuable information and education on specific topics or conditions. Members can learn about the latest research, treatment options, coping strategies, and available resources. Guest speakers or experts may be invited to provide specialized knowledge, enhancing the group's collective understanding.

Emotional Support

One of the primary functions of support groups is to offer emotional support and validation to individuals facing similar challenges. Participants can share their experiences, feelings, and concerns without judgment, knowing that others can relate and empathize. This support fosters a sense of belonging, reduces feelings of isolation, and validates individuals' experiences.

Skill Building

Skill groups equip individuals with practical skills and coping strategies to navigate challenges effectively. These groups foster personal growth by providing a supportive environment for skill development. Participants gain valuable tools to enhance their resilience and improve their ability to cope with various aspects of life.

Common questions about Skill Groups

  • Most skill groups will meet virtually in the evenings. Groups start monthly if there is adequate participation. Each skill group requires four participants and is capped at 15 participants per group.

  • All of our skill groups are 100% online. This allows people from throughout the state of North Carolina to participate. Also, many participants prefer a virtual group for convenience.

  • Absolutely not. The purpose of a skill group is to feel empowered and find encouragement from other people. While I encourage anyone to talk to get the most from the group, talking is never required.

  • Participants are encouraged and expected not to discuss topics or people outside of the group. Unfortunately, I cannot control what others say outside of the group. However, if a participant discusses a person outside of the group in a harmful manner, that person will be removed from the skill group and not be allowed to participate in future groups.

Also, as a psychotherapist, I do not disclose any information outside of a skill group unless a person is a danger to themselves or someone else. In that case, as a mandated reporter, I have to disclose information relevant to the issue. However, I will never discuss topics outside of the group that does not relate to a mandated report.

  • Skill groups are $50 per 60-minute session. Groups meet for four weeks at a time with pre-determined topics. These topics are unique to each group. Participants will receive information before each group to have advanced knowledge of the topic being discussed for that session.

If a person is not a current client of SouthPark Psych, they will need to complete an initial intake with Sara. This is a brief introduction to ensure the participant is a good fit for the group.

Please note: Skill groups are a private pay service not covered by insurance. Each session is billed individually on the day of the group.
